Jadon Sancho’s salary demands scuppered move to Chelsea | OneFootball

Chelsea recently opted against signing Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho.

The 25-year-old joined the Blues last summer in a loan deal that included an obligation to buy for £25 million.

But the club decided to pay a £5m penalty to send him back to United.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has now revealed that a permanent transfer didn’t materialise due to Sanch’s excessive salary demands.

Sancho is currently earning £300,000-per-week at United, but Chelsea were unwilling to offer the same.

Ornstein said: “He’s not joining Chelsea – they couldn’t reach an agreement with him on personal terms and paid the £5 million penalty that nullified the loan with an obligation to buy from Manchester United.

“The expectation I have is that United will strike a deal with another club. Sancho is assessing his options now, whether it will be in England or more likely overseas, to continue his career elsewhere.

“It is essentially the reason why Chelsea have not been able to sign him because he was earning too much money at Manchester United for the Chelsea wage bill.”

Sancho helped Chelsea win the Europa Conference League by scoring in the final against Real Betis last month.

He bagged five goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, but there were long periods when his performances were unconvincing.

Staying at United is unlikely after he made himself unpopular among the club’s fans with his controversial social media comments.

The forward was involved in a public spat with former Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag in September 2023, which led to his loan transfer to Dortmund the following January.

He impressed during his temporary stay in Germany, and Chelsea signed him for the 2024-25 campaign but opted against making his loan deal permanent.
