AS Roma have taken a surprise transfer stance on Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho after he rejected them earlier on Monday.

Sancho turned down Roma

United are desperately trying to ship off Sancho as the close of the summer transfer window nears. A member of Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’, Sancho does not have a future at Old Trafford.

He fell out with now-sacked manager Erik ten Hag, prompting United to sanction a loan exit to Chelsea last season. He didn’t pull up any trees at Stamford Bridge and the Blues opted against exercising their obligation to permanently sign him after he refused to agree to a pay cut.

Chelsea paid United a penalty fee of £5m for opting out of the loan obligation.

Sancho has since been available for transfer but his hefty wage demands have warded off the few admirers that have expressed interest in signing him.

However, over the past few days, it emerged that Roma were seriously considering adding the England international to their ranks. Roma tabled a bid worth £20m for Sancho – a sum United deemed acceptable.

But, just like Chelsea, Roma could not get Sancho to slightly compromise on his salary expectations. Fabrizio Romano revealed that Sancho turned down the Giallorossi. He also rebuffed overtures from Turkish outfit Besiktas, who also expressed a willingness to offer him an escape out of Old Trafford.

Romano added that Sancho’s agent informed Roma the forward would not be joining under the current terms on the table.

However, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Roma are not giving up on trying to lure Sancho to Stadio Olimpico, with the Serie A giants poised to launch another attempt to land the player.

Roma’s shock new position on Sancho

Di Marzio reveals, “Despite receiving a no on the morning of Monday 18 August, Roma have not given up on the pursuit of Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho.”

“The Giallorossi aren’t giving up, and they’re currently trying to convince the English player. There are no problems with the Red Devils, but they’re working to secure the green light for the former Chelsea player.”

Di Marzio mentions that there is a “small chance” Sancho will be sporting the Roma shirt during the 2025/26 campaign.

Club boss Gian Piero Gasperini is pushing hard to get a deal for the 25-year-old over the line.
