Winning Player of the Month in May wasn't enough for this German footballer. After a strong three-game stretch, Marco Reus wins the honor once again.
Ever since his debut a year ago, the veteran midfielder has been one of the LA Galaxy's biggest assets. That is, when he is able to stay health and, on the field.
On Saturday, Reus wore the captain's band for the first time ever in his MLS career. Maya Yoshida and Diego Fagundez have held this honor on more than one occasion this season.
The LA Galaxy have still only won one time this season. Though Reus did not play in the 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake, he proved he is a viable part of this team.
On June 14, the LA Galaxy had a 3-2 lead against St. Louis City SC just before stoppage time of the second half. Gabriel Pec scored twice, and newcomer Matheus Nascimento found the back of the net for the first time this season.
"Marco has been outstanding in these games. Again, I think as he feels -- he's just such an intelligent player. He is so just smooth and taking the ball under pressure in these games where teams are trying to match up one-on-one, he's good, his touch is soft, he uses his body very well to protect the ball. He sees actions before the actions are happening, and that just -- again, when you're a team that plays you like this, it really helps to give you these little time edges and little advantages that actually turn into attacks. "Greg Vanney, head coach of the LA Galaxy
Reus assisted on two of those goals. The LA Galaxy were shoutout, 2-0, in their next game. They couldn't get things going against the Colorado Rapids.
When the LA Galaxy traveled to San Jose last Saturday, they looked up at the scoreboard during halftime. They carried a one goal deficit going into the break.
In the 70th minute, Marco Reus shot for the third time, and second on target. The LA Galaxy managed to walk away with a 1-1 draw against one of the Western Conference's best offenses. That means the 36-year-old accounted for 75% of the team's goals (scored or assisted) in June.
Though the Los Angeles Galaxy will not be sending a representative to the MLS All-Star Game in a couple weeks, Reus has been the closest thing the defending champions have to one. Pec and Riqui Puig were named All-Stars last season.
Marco Reus and Company are back in action on Friday. The LA Galaxy will host the Vancouver Whitecaps at Dignity Health Sports Park for their 29th game during the 4th of July. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. (CT).
