Italian journalist Riccardo Trevisani has hailed Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi for his tactical acumen and innovative approach.
Speaking to Cronache di Spogliatoio via FCInter1908, Trevisani credited Inzaghi for inventing a new role in football.
After facing harsh criticism during his early tenure at Giuseppe Meazza, Inzaghi has become one of Europe’s most highly-rated coaches.
Indeed, the 48-year-old has masterminded Inter’s return to prominence.
Together with Beppe Marotta, Inzaghi has laid the foundation for Inter’s long-term dominance in Serie A.
Furthermore, he already guided the Nerazzurri into their first UEFA Champions League final in over a decade in 2023.
He’s on the verge of propelling them into the knockout stages this season.
Given the difficulties imposed by the newly formatted league phase, it’s no small feat.
Many of Inzaghi’s early choices at Inter had been subjects of mass criticism.
However, the ex-Lazio manager has stayed the course and eventually silenced his doubters.
What separates Inzaghi from his peers is his understanding of the game.
Indeed, he was among the first coaches to realize the importance of subbing off booked players.
No matter how vital they are to his set-up, they’re out once they receive yellow cards.
“There is a topic related to yellow cards because Simone Inzaghi invented a profession,” Trevisani said.
“It is the profession of substituting the booked player.
“At first, I must tell the truth. There was a lot of skepticism because you penalized a player just because he received a yellow card.
“And so there could have been a problem.
“Today, almost every coach does what Simone Inzaghi decided to do.
“I don’t know if today’s football is the same as before.
“But I’m sure that today a team that stays with ten men loses 85, 90, maybe 95% of the time.”
