Lyon are pushing ahead to try and sign Liverpool's Tyler Morton, who is a target for Ipswich Town.
Lyon are moving ahead of their rivals, including Ipswich Town, in the race to sign Liverpool’s Tyler Morton as they hold discussions over a £15m deal for the midfielder.
It’s no secret that the Tractor Boys are looking to strengthen in the middle of the park, with Kalvin Phillips, Massimo Luongo, Jens Cajuste and club captain Sam Morsy having all departed the club since last season.
Even with the arrival of Azor Matusiwa, Ipswich need reinforcements, and it has been claimed that they are monitoring Morton, who is understandably way down the pecking order at Anfield.
However, they face an uphill battle to land the England U21 international, who was part of Lee Carsley’s side that won the European Championship this summer.
That’s after it was revealed by Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam that Lyon have started negotiations with Liverpool over a transfer, as they try to conclude a £15m deal.
The reporter confirms that a host of clubs have been tracking Morton, with Ipswich namechecked, along with Braga, West Ham and Strasbourg all in the mix for his signature, but it’s Lyon who appear to have made the first major move.
It hasn’t been as hectic a summer window for Ipswich as some would have expected following their relegation, and Kieran McKenna will be pleased with how his squad looks going into the new season.
But, the glaring issue in the side is the middle of the park, and Ipswich need real quality to add to the XI - and Morton would fit the bill.
You only have to look at the clubs keen on the 22-year-old to see that he would be a major coup for Ipswich, but it’s obviously going to be hard to convince Morton to drop to the Championship when clubs like Lyon are keen.
So, the reality is that Ipswich may have to move on to other targets, and it seems they do have plenty of options on the table, as they are trying to sign Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, who would be another fantastic addition for the Suffolk outfit.
With just over four weeks left in the window, Ipswich will expect to be active, and it will be interesting to see who they bring in to strengthen the midfield.
