The defending champions have only averaged 1.3 points per game in meetings with teams in the top eight and Inzaghi urged his players to change their approach in the second part of the season.

“We need to change our approach in games against direct rivals. That’s a fact,” the Nerazzurri boss said at a post-match press conference attended by Football Italia.

“It’s something that needs to be analysed. In previous years, we performed well in certain matches, but this season, we’ve been lacking, and we need to improve. I told the boys tonight that I had never created so many chances in a single half here. The defeat hurts, but it will push us to work even harder. What we’re doing is not enough.”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan also seemed worried about Inter’s poor results in big games but admitted that he and his teammates “didn’t know” why they’ve been struggling against direct opponents.

Inzaghi replaced Federico Dimarco and Alessandro Bastoni around minute 60 last night, and a reporter asked the Inter coach if he regretted his decision.

“We knew Juventus would come back with more energy, and their substitutions had a big impact,” he replied.

“We had the game under control, and we saw how the goal happened. Kolo Muani turned well, and the ball passed through. On that individual moment, we needed to do better and help each other more.”

Inter remain two points below leaders Napoli. Their next match is at home against Genoa on February 22.
