Ligue 1’s anti-homophobia was already a talking point prior to AS Monaco’s encounter with FC Nantes at the Stade Louis II. After rejecting to wear the rainbow shirts as part of the LFP’s anti-homophobia campaign last season, Mostafa Mohamed (26) was once again left out of Les Canaris’ matchday squad this weekend. With no injury noted, the Egyptian international’s absence naturally raised questions.

Mohamed Camara (24) did feature in the encounter, however, the Malian international did not gather for the pre-match photo behind a sign that read “Homophobia Football” with a cross through the word homophobia. Camara instead remained at the side of the pitch before rejoining teammates for kick-off.

In addition, Camara had altered his shirt. All players wore anti-homophobia badges that were visible on the front of the jerseys. Monaco midfielder Camara covered his badge up with white tape, whilst the rainbow on the Ligue 1 badge on the sleeve was also masked by tape.

Monaco manager Adi Hütter stated that discussions would be held with Camara following the incident. “Firstly, we as a club, support the league’s initiative, for sure. It was a personal initiative from Mo Camara. We will have this conversation with Mo internally. Internally, we will discuss this situation. I had the badges on in the game, I support the league’s initiative,” said Hütter in a post-match press conference, attended by Get French Football News.
