Defending Serie A champions Inter have suffered a significant injury scare during the ongoing international break. According to Calciomercato, Hakan Calhanoglu picked up a new fitness problem during Turkey’s tepid 0-0 home draw against Wales on Saturday afternoon.

Calhanoglu had to come off on the stroke of halftime after feeling pain in the same area that had previously sidelined him. The 30-year-old sustained a thigh injury during Inter’s 1-0 Serie A win against Roma on October 20. He only returned to the pitch last week.

However, Inter could be without their talismanic midfielder again.

“I felt a twinge in the same spot where I had discomfort before, so I preferred not to take any risks. I’ll have an MRI on Sunday,” the Inter superstar said after the game.

Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella also addressed the issue in the aftermath.

“It’s never easy to do without a player like him who makes a difference. I took him off because he wasn’t feeling well, but I hope to have him back for the next match.”

Calhanoglu’s absence is the last thing Inter need as they bid to defend the title amid a fierce Scudetto competition this season. His missed penalty in a 1-1 draw against Napoli last time out left the Nerazzurri a point adrift of Antonio Conte’s table-toppers.

But it’s worth noting that Calhanoglu’s rocket missile drew Inter level in that match, highlighting his importance to Simone Inzaghi’s tactical set-up. With two points separating the first six teams in Serie A, this isn’t a good time for Inter to lose their playmaker.
