Harry Kane drew a blank, as Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich lost 2-1 to Serie A side Inter Milan in the first leg of the two sides' Champions League quarter-final at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.
Inter secured a crucial late victory, after the hosts thought they had earned a share of the spoils with Thomas Muller's late effort cancelling out Lautaro Martinez's first-half opener for the Italians.
However, there was a twist in the tail of the encounter with Davide Frattesi netting a dramatic winner for the visitors off the bench.
The German side were the dominant force in the opening 30 minutes, and England captain Kane really should have put his side ahead, but he inexplicably hit the post from close range after some fantastic work from Michael Olise.
As it turned out, Bayern fell behind as Inter hit the net with their first shot on target.
The Serie A leaders delivered a brilliant team goal in the 38th minute. Marcus Thuram showed remarkable skill to leap and flick the ball into the path of Lautaro Martinez, who flicked a wonderful finish into the top corner with the outside of his boot.
Bayern pressed late on for a leveller and they had one when Muller equalised in the 85th minute, with a close-range finish that appeared to have rescued the hosts from defeat. The 35-year-old confirmed last week that he would be leaving the club in the summer, bringing an end to his 25-year association with Bayern, and his equaliser was a big goal from Konrad Laimer's low cross.
However, there was another dramatic turn of events just two minutes later, as Inter launched a swift counterattack and Carlos Augusto's precise cross was converted by substitute Frattesi to give the Italians the advantage ahead of the second leg.
This defeat marked the end of Bayern's 22-match unbeaten streak at home in the Champions League, a run that had lasted since 2021.
The second leg will take place at the San Siro on Wednesday, 16 April, with the winners progressing to the semi-finals, where they will face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund. The final is scheduled to be held at Bayern's Allianz Arena on 31 May.
