Inter Milan vs Fluminense LIVE: Reaction as Brazilian side secure historic win in Club World Cup last 16 | OneFootball

Fluminense secured a famous win over Inter Milan in the Club World Cup to set up a potential quarter-final tie with Manchester City.

The Brazilian side got off to the perfect start when the high press won the ball and it broke to Jhon Arias, whose deflected cross set up an easy finish for German Cano.

Inter offered little as they looked to equalise, with the Italian side going in behind at the break, and though they started the second half more positively, they rarely looked like scoring other than a point-blank miss from Stefan de Vrij.

That was until the final 10 minutes, when the game sprung into life and Lautaro Martinez forced a great save from Fabio before a long-range shot ricocheted off the post.

But it was not enough for Inter as they pressed for an equaliser, with Fluminense punishing them as the ball fell to Hercules near the box and the Brazilian wrapped a lovely finish into the corner to secure a historic win.

The Fifa Club World Cup 2025 is underway with Chelsea and Manchester City ready to battle the likes of Real Madrid, Copa Libertadores champions Botafogo and more in the knock-out phase of the tournament.

Pep Guardiola’s side are the defending champions, having claimed victory in 2023 with goals from Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden in a comfortable 4-0 final win against Fluminense.

While City and Real Madrid enter the revamped 32-team tournament as joint-favourites, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Inter Milan and PSG are among the most-fancied sides competing to be in the final on 13 July.

There are three games remaining in the round of 16, with Manchester City taking on Al-Hilal in Orlando tonight (2am BST kick-off).

Tomorrow, Real Madrid face Juventus in the penultimate last-16 tie at 8pm BST, before Borussia Dortmund play Monterrey in the final match of the round in Atlanta, with kick-off there at 2am BST on Wednesday, 2 July.

Chivu reacts

Inter manager Christian Chivu says that it wasn’t to be for his side.

“We didn’t give up, we tried until the end, we tried to make changes. It wasn’t our day, we tried our best and it wasn’t a day for us.

“We didn’t expect them to play five at the back, but they were well-organised in the low block. It was hard for us to find a resolution.

“We tried to build something with two strikers, but it wasn’t our day,” he adds as he finishes.

Silva reacts

Thiago Silva was speaking to DAZN after the match, and he says he was “very proud of my team and my teammates”.

“This game is so hard to play, they played the Champions League final a month ago! It’s not easy to play like this, it’s too hot, but it is what it is. Fluminense are a big team!

“This game is hard for us because they played well, but I think we’re very happy to win like this, 2-0 is not easy, we’re very happy,” he adds as he finishes.

Fluminense’s next game comes in the quarter-final of the competition, with the Brazilian side set to face either Manchester City or Al-Hilal.

That match kicks off at 8pm BST on Friday, 4 July in Orlando, Florida.

As for Inter, they will have a brief break before preseason begins ahead of the Serie A season starting on 25 August.
