FC Barcelona will now face off against Inter Milan at the San Siro for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash. The first match ended in a 3-3 draw between the two sides, so there is everything to play for in this upcoming game.
Both sides have been strong domestically, but this is now the biggest game of the season for the two teams. Whoever wins here will end up in the Champions League final, and Barcelona will aim to be the team that ends up booking their spot in this year’s final.
Heading into this game, however, both sides have been thinking about this fixture constantly. Even in their previous league games, both Hansi Flick and Simone Inzaghi made rotations while keeping this Champions League clash in mind. That just goes on to show what is truly at stake here.
The first leg that was played between these two sides at the Montjuic Stadium ended in a thrilling draw. Both sides scored three goals, and it was clear to see that this fixture would need something truly special to enable one side to reach the final.
However, certain things were proven during that first leg. Despite being the Champions League’s best defense by a convincing margin, Inter Milan’s wall at the back could not keep Barcelona at bay. Throughout the game, Barça managed to find the back of the net.
Unfortunately for the Catalan giants, they conceded a lot of goals as well. Primarily through set pieces, Hansi Flick’s side struggled to contain Inter Milan as much as they would have liked. Still, there is a lot of improvement required in that area, and Barcelona will need to manage it.
In terms of form, Barça do have a slight upper hand. Over the last five games, Hansi Flick’s side has managed four wins and one draw. This included a 3-2 win over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, and the momentum from that massive win is still pushing this Barcelona team.
They have managed to score 13 goals across these five games, but have conceded nine goals in return. While it is certainly not a bad goal difference, it is still a worrying one considering Inter Milan’s ability to punish mistakes.
As for the Italian side itself, the Serie A giants have three losses, one draw, and one win in their last five games. The draw came against Barcelona in their previous meeting, but they are still an incredibly difficult team to beat at the San Siro.
Across those five games, Simone Inzaghi’s side has scored four goals but has conceded eight goals in return. A negative balance, but certainly one that has not decreased Inter Milan’s quality in the Champions League and their ability to take on even the best European sides and overcome them.
Thus, this game will be all about which side manages to take their chances. In a clash of moments, both Barcelona and Inter Milan will be hoping to be as clinical as possible in this game. Ultimately, however, only one team will leave the San Siro with a guaranteed place in the final at the Allianz Arena.
