Inter Milan participated in the Club World Cup this summer.

The Nerazzurri drew with Monterrey and then beat the likes of Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate in the group stage.

However, Inter suffered a disappointing – and surprising – early exit in the knockout rounds.

The Nerazzurri lost 0-2 against Brazilian side Fluminense. They had the majority of possession, but lacked cutting edge in the final third and looked very vulnerable on the counterattack.

Moreover, it was not just elimination from the Club World Cup for Inter.

The Nerazzurri had also lost out on the Serie A title to Napoli on the final day of the season, by just a single point. Then, they suffered a humbling 5-0 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.

Inter Milan Vice-President Javier Zanetti said that his team had “mixed feelings” about the Club World Cup.

“And a fantastic season, and especially one with so many matches, being eliminated by Fluminense hurt us.”

“Because we thought that we could play a different match, and reach the quarterfinals.”

Zanetti then commented that “it didn’t go our way, but oh well.”

“Now our players are resting up to face what promises to be a very busy season.”

“The number of matches we played is something we took into consideration,” Zanetti added. “But when you play for a bug team, it’s normal to have those kinds of matches.”
