Inter Milan will be going up against RB Leipzig for the first time in their history in tomorrow’s Champions League clash.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They also note that the Nerazzurri’s recent record against German teams has been far from positive.
Tomorrow evening, Inter will return to action in the Champions League.
The Nerazzurri’s previous four matches in the “league phase” of the knockout competitions were a draw against Manchester City followed by wins over Red Star Belgrade, Young Boys, and Arsenal.
Inter’s next two matches in the competition, meanwhile, are against German teams.
Tomorrow, the Nerazzurri will face RB Leipzig. Leipzig are currently struggling in the Champions League, where they are one of six teams yet to take a single point.
Then next month, Inter take on German champions Bayer Leverkusen in their sixth match of the “league phase.”
As the Gazzetta note, tomorrow’s match will be the first time Inter ever take on Leipzig.
RB Leipzig have enjoyed a meteoric and relatively recent rise over the last decade.
Energy drink company Red Bull has underwritten their rise to prominence.
Since their promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2016-17 season, Leipzig have become regulars in the Champions League.
Prior to that, however, Leipzig had never played in Europe’s top club competition.
Therefore, it is not too surprising that Inter and Leipzig have never met previously.
Inter have taken on a total of thirteen different German teams in competitive matches. Leipzig will be the fourteenth.
And as the Gazzetta note, Inter’s recent record against German teams in Europe has not been hugely positive.
Of the Nerazzurri’s last eleven matches against teams from the Bundesliga, they have won just three.
Inter’s two most recent matches against German opposition were Champions League group stage outings against Bayern Munich in the 2022-23 season.
Both of those matches ended in losses for Inter, in which they failed to score a goal.
