Inter Milan are confident they’ll reach an agreement with Denzel Dumfries over a new contract as Man United is no longer posing a threat.

In the past months, most news sources in Italy were tipping the Dutchman to leave the club in the summer.

The 28-year-old is running on a contract expiring in 2025. Hence, the Nerazzurri were planning to sell the player this summer to avoid losing his services for free a year later.

In addition to Manchester United, Aston Villa also emerged as a possible destination.

However, the situation has drastically changed over the past few weeks. Inter have finally found a breakthrough in their negotiations with the wingback’s entourage.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport via FcInterNews, the club’s sporting director Piero Ausilio held a meeting with the player’s agents on Monday.

While the white smoke has yet to emerge, the Roman newspaper reveals the summit was in fact positive.

The two parties are thus edging ever closer to reaching the finish line.

Hence, the source notes that the Italian champions are now more optimistic than ever about signing an extension.

Moreover, Man United’s threat has reportedly faded. The Red Devils haven’t launched any concrete offer for the Netherlands international.

Dumfries himself confirmed his desire to stay at the club which he considers home.

“I want to stay. Inter is my home, I feel part of a family,” said the wingback while on international duty during the EURO 2024 campaign.

The former PSV Eindhoven star has now returned from his summer vacation and resumed duty.

The Dutchman made his first appearance in pre-season in yesterday’s friendly defeat against Al-Ittihad. He entered the pitch as a substitute just after the hour mark.

Dumfries remains a key player in Simone Inzaghi’s tactical system, but could once again face competition from Matteo Darmian for a starting berth on the right flank.
