Dumfries has now won his first ever league title since joining Inter.

The Dutchman made the move to the Nerazzurri from PSV in the summer of 2021.

There have been ups and downs. But Dumfries has helped Inter to reach the summit in the Italian top flight.

However, there is a sense that this could be an achievement that caps off Dumfries’s time at Inter.

The reason for that has to do with the 28-year-old’s contract situation.

At the moment, Dumfries is under contract with Inter until the end of June 2025. He is still on the same four-year deal that he signed when he arrived at the club.

And the Nerazzurri do not want to see Dumfries go into the final year of his deal without a new contract in hand.

Then, there would be the risk of Inter losing Dumfries on a free transfer.

Therefore, the club’s stance seems to be clear. They either want the 28-year-old to sign a new deal, or else will aim to sell him this summer.

Reports indicate that the negotiations have been ongoing between Inter and the representatives of Dumfries.

There has been some distance between the player’s demands, and what Inter are willing to offer.

The next round of talks will likely be decisive as far as whether Dumfries extends his contract or not.

The Dutchman explained that “We haven’t been working on that yet. Because we’ve still been working to win the Scudetto.”

“Now the Euros are also approaching as well,” he noted.

Dumfries said that “You never know how things will go. But the talks have been going well.”

“The club is going through a particular moment, but I expect that the talks will resume soon.”

Meanwhile, Dumfries also admitted that in his altercation with AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez that led to him being sent off in the derby, “I’m a bit embarrassed to have let the situation go like that.”

“I think a yellow card would’ve been fine though,” the Dutchman added.

Then, Dumfries also addressed the fact that he is not always a starter for Inter. “I’ve always read a lot of stories about it,” he said.

“But the truth is, I had an injury that had been causing me problems for a long time,” he continued.

“It’s a hamstring injury. The one I picked up against Atalanta.”

“I continued playing,” Dumfries noted. “Which actually caused me some problems.”

“It wasn’t smart of me to continue playing with that injury.”

“Now I want to focus on being 100% fit,” Dumfries concluded.
