Legendary former midfielder Wesley Sneijder feels that Inter Milan have reached the top, including in the Champions League.
The Dutchman spoke to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. He also gave his thoughts on compatriots Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries.
Inter have grown a lot in the last few seasons.
When coach Inzaghi took over at the Nerazzurri, he had a tough job in replacing Simone Inzaghi as coach.
But Inzaghi has really remade the team in his own image.
And with the 48-year-old former Lazio coach have come trophies.
Inter have won a total of six trophies under Inzaghi. The Serie A title, the Coppa Italia twice, and the Supercoppa Italiana on three occasions.
This week, Inter have the chance to fight for another one. They can make it four Supercoppa titles on the bounce by beating Atalanta and then either Juventus or AC Milan.
Inter have become a dominant force domestically.
But in Europe as well, there has been a trajectory of growth and improvement.
Inzaghi has guided Inter to the knockout stages of the Champions League in each of his three seasons in charge so far.
This season, it looks very likely that the Nerazzurri will be in the round of sixteen yet again.
And in the 2022-23 season, Inter made it all the way to the final of the Champions League.
“Inter’s entire team is as good as the very best teams in the Champions League,” argued former Nerazzuri midfielder Sneijder. He won the competition with Inter in 2010.
“In midfield, the team plays quickly. They know how to get forward and shoot.”
“They manage moments of matches well,” Sneijder argued. “Which for me is the most important thing in football.”
“Their mechanisms of play have improved season after season,” the Dutchman continued.
“Today, when Calhanoglu receives the ball, he can get the ball up the pitch quickly. He knows where his teammates are with his eyes closed.”
“Then Barella and Mkhitaryan link up more with the wingbacks.”
“And when someone is out, Frattesi or Zielinski can come in,” Sneijder noted.
Sneijder then said that “It seems to me that Inzaghi has found his own style.”
“The only coach Simone resembles is… Simone.”
“In terms of both the formation, and the way that the players seem very attached to him.”
And Sneijder called defender Stefan de Vrij a “diamond.”
“He has to be preserved,” the Dutchman argued. “He’s back to his best.”
“He never causes controversy. He’s intelligent.”
“And I’m happy about the contract extension of Dumfries,” Sneijder added, of another fellow Dutchman.
He called Dumfries “a certainty for Inter.”
“He’s a classic player who’s at his best when he’s up against a good opponent.”
“That shows that he has personality as well as quality,” Sneijder argued.
