Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi blasted his team for letting an unprecedented fourth consecutive Supercoppa Italiana title slip through.
During his post-match interview via FCInterNews, Inzaghi admitted his side let AC Milan win a lost game.
Indeed, the Nerazzurri looked all set for a record-equaling ninth Supercoppa Italiana title.
Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi fired them 2-0 up, suggesting the Riyadh showpiece should be another day in the office.
However, Sergio Conceicao won his first trophy as Milan boss in only his second game in charge.
Milan fought back to claim a remarkable 3-2 triumph, posting back-to-back wins against Inter for the first time since 2011.
It was a bitter experience for Inzaghi and his team.
Losing Hakan Calhanoglu to a fitness problem late in the first half only added insult to injury.
“We reopened the game ourselves,” Inzaghi said. “The 2-1 goal was probably preceded by a foul on Asllani.
“But it could also not be called; however, the ball was ours, and at that moment, we reopened a game that seemed closed.
“We were in control, and that free kick changed the course of the match.
“There were errors and inaccuracies, but we did what we had to do to try and win.
“Our defenders were fatigued, but I couldn’t make changes. We should have closed the game at 2-0.
“Now, we’ll return to Italy with a very painful defeat.
“We’re coming back very tired, with a few knocks, and we’ll need to respond as we always have.”
Inzaghi urged his players to respond to this nightmare.
“We have to do well; this is a defeat that hurts the entire club. We were two goals ahead in a derby.
“We need to regroup after the mistakes that prevented us from winning a trophy.”
Meanwhile, he regrets losing the final under such circumstances.
“We cared deeply about this match, and we had set it on the right path.
“Then there was an incident that changed the game, but a team like ours must not fall apart: conceding goals happen.
“In that moment, we created incredible chances. We weren’t able to close the game; we should have done better.”
In addition to Calhanoglu, Inter lost Marcus Thuram to a muscular problem against Atalanta last Thursday.
However, the Frenchman should be ready for the upcoming Serie A clash against Venezia.
“Beyond the absences, we must also rely on the players who step in,” Inzaghi continued.
“Aside from Calhanoglu and Thuram, I’m thinking about the defenders we left at home, who could have helped us a lot.
“We need to focus on looking ahead and recovering two important players. We know we must push forward, bringing them back into the fold.
“Two key players have been out for too long. We’re doing everything possible to recover them as soon as possible.
“For the others, playing every three days takes a toll.”
Finally, Inzaghi confirms he didn’t have time to speak with Conceicao after the match.
“I didn’t have the pleasure,” he stated. “Compliments to the opposing team are in order. They never gave up.
“Then there are our shortcomings because a team like ours should not let the opponent back into the game.
“We made mistakes, and we’ll study them to avoid repeating them in the future.”
