Inter Milan Legend Optimistic Following Takeover: “Oaktree Wants To Keep The Club Competitive” | OneFootball

Inter Milan icon Beppe Bergomi expects Inter Milan to remain competitive under the guidance of new their new owners Oaktree Capital.

The American investment company took over the club’s majority shares this week when Suning failed to repay their loan by Monday’s deadline.

Oaktree is now in the process of acquiring the club and placing a new board of directors.

The Californian fund is expected to linger at Inter for several years until they opt to sell the club to a new buyer.

But in order to protect their interests, Oaktree would want Inter to be competitive on the pitch. Therefore, Bergomi remains optimistic about the future of his beloved club.

“It seems to me that keeping Inter competitive is above all in the best interests of the new owners,” said the 60-year-old in his interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews.

Over the past few years, the club has been breaking even on the market. Inter has been in self-management mode for a while.”

Bergomi also explained why he rules out a new project emphasizing on youngsters.

“I don’t think the fans would accept it. Marotta has chosen the path of taking some good young players but also some free transfers in their thirties who are already used to winning.

“I don’t see why the club should change this policy at the moment.”

The iconic defender also named three players that Inter cannot afford to lose.

“Some players are essential, starting with Lautaro. In addition to the Argentine, Barella and Calhanoglu are also pivotal.”

On the other hand, he would be willing to discuss a transfer for Marcus Thuram under the right circumstances.

“Thuram is fourth on my list. But he has a release clause of 85 million euros.

“I would sit at the table if someone is willing to pay this figure. This is football now. But Marcus was also fundamental in the dressing room.”

Finally, Bergomi identified the defense as the department that could do with a big investment.

“I would go for a defender who has different traits from the current ones. Someone who’s fast and capable of defending even in the open field.

“I’d keep Acerbi and De Vrij at the club, but I also have to think about the future.”
