Inter Milan are targeting an improvement to their mediocre record against direct Serie A rivals this season, starting with Lazio.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
This season in Serie A, Inter are starting to really find their form against teams lower in the table.
The Nerazzurri have put dropped points against teams like Genoa and Monza early in the campaign behind them.
Inter have been ruthless in matches against opposition like Venezia, Hellas Verona, and Parma.
That is certainly going to be necessary if Inter want to prevail in what looks to be a fierce multi-team title race.
But it won’t be enough.
Inter secured an emphatic win over Atalanta in their first match of the season against a direct title rival.
At the time, the Nerazzurri’s 4-0 victory did not make it look as though they would be playing catch-up to La Dea in December.
But a frustrating inability to take three points against their biggest rivals has hurt Inter in the months following.
The Nerazzurri lost to AC Milan, and then drew with Juventus and Napoli.
The derby defeat to the Rossoneri was well-deserved, as Inter looked second best all match long.
On the other hand, the draws with Juventus and Napoli were more frustrating.
Against the Bianconeri, Inter squandered a two-goal cushion in the second half. Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri missed a second-half penalty that could have given them three points against Napoli.
On Monday, Inter face a Lazio side who have been in blazing form in Serie A.
And this time, the Nerazzurri need a convincing performance – and three points – to really reassert their title credentials.
