Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez responded to a former teammate Romelu Lukaku scoring against Atalanta with his heroics against Empoli.

Napoli have been piling the pressure on Inter in the Serie A title race.

The Partenopei’s victory over Atalanta on Saturday made yesterday’s match against Empoli virtually must-win for the Nerazzurri.

And the player who had given that win to Napoli was striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian popped up with the decisive goal in the second half. His header made it 3-2 late on in the five-goal thriller.

Lukaku will certainly be a familiar face to Inter. And to Nerazzurri captain Martinez.

The two strikers enjoyed a fruitful partnership in attack for two seasons, although in Lukaku’s return things never quite worked out.

In the end, there was a falling-out between Lukaku and Martinez during the summer of 2023. This coincided with the Belgian turning his back on Inter as a whole.

Martinez will undoubtedly have been watching as his former strike partner powered Napoli to a huge statement win in the Serie A title race in Bergmo.

And it was certainly the Inter captain who had the pressure on his shoulders to respond.

Martinez proved to be up to the task, though.

While Inter as a whole were not necessarily at their best against Empoli, Martinez certainly was.

It was one of the Argentine’s best performances of the entire season, easily. At times, he appeared downright unplayable.

And Martinez was the player who broke the deadlock in what had been a slog of a match. He did so with a spectacular long-range effort.
