Inter lost in the Milan derby for the second time this season.

The Nerazzurri had lost in the first league meeting with city rivals AC Milan of the campaign in September.

And this time around, the Rossoneri managed to get the better of Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana.

In many ways the matches were similar. Milan’s energy and direct style of play made life very difficult for Inter, particularly as the game started to get stretched.

However, this time around it was an even more dramatic story.

Inter will have surely thought they were in for a fourth consecutive Supercoppa triumph after going 2-0 up.

However, a frenetic second half comeback from the Rossoneri completely re-wrote that script.

Inter Captain Lautaro Martinez Credits AC Milan: “Never Stopped Believing”

After the match, Inter captain Martinez said that “In terms of the positives, we did pretty well in the first half.”

“And then we came out well at the start of the second half.”

“But after we went 2-0 up, Inter stopped playing,” Martinez admitted. “Stopped having the intensity that they had right up to the last moment.”

“In this kind of match, you pay for that,” the Inter captain lamented.

But Martinez insisted that “There’s always hunger in a final.”

“We kept playing, We missed from some good situations to score. Frattesi when it was 2-2, Denzel, Mkhitaryan, my chance.”

“We had chances,” the Argentine said.

“Episodes change matches,” Martinez added. “We didn’t do well to take advantage of our chances.”

“I don’t know whether we lost deservedly or not,” the Nerazzurri captain said. “But Milan never stopped believing, and they certainly deserve a lot of credit.”

Martinez then added that it’s “difficult to explain” why the team came apart after going 2-0 up.

“The first thing that certainly comes to mind is the tension. Because we knew that Milan’s most dangerous weapons were on the counter.”

“Their players are quick on the counter,” added the Inter captain.

“We didn’t mark them well enough.”

“And then, we had some chances in attack to kill the game off, but we didn’t” Martinez added. “These things happen.”
