Inter Milan skipper Lautaro Martinez reminded Serie A who he is with a sublimely-taken winner against Roma on Sunday.

According to Corriere dello Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, the Argentina international’s return to form coincides with a defensive resurgence at Giuseppe Meazza.

Martinez was a key cog in Simone Inzaghi’s title-winning machinery last season.

The 27-year-old won the Capocannoniere award with 24 goals, inspiring Inter to their landmark 20th Serie A title.

However, the former Racing Club star was slow out of the blocks at the beginning of 2024/25.

Only three goals from seven league appearances have raised concerns about the Argentine’s form.

But his goals were instrumental.

After netting a match-winning brace in a 3-2 victory against Udinese, Lautaro settled a heated affair in Rome.

It wasn’t a routine finish by any stretch of the imagination. It was a screamer.

More importantly, it helped Inter stay within striking distance of early pacesetters Napoli.

In addition to Martinez’s return to form, Inter recorded an important feat at the Stadio Olimpico.

Indeed, Inzaghi’s side registered only their third clean sheet in eight league matches this season.

Defensive resilience was the backbone of Inter’s Scudetto last term.

However, the Nerazzurri have been prone to conceding cheap goals at the start of their title defense.

It’s enough to say they’ve capitulated multiple times in 50% of their Serie A fixtures in 2024/25.

That alone illustrates the magnitude of the problem.

But Inzaghi’s charges held their ground against Roma.

Yann Sommer had only had to make three saves. And it’s equally significant to note all three attempts came from outside the box.

If Inter can maintain that level of defensive discipline and composure, they can turn their shaky start around.

Holding Roma to just a handful of long-range efforts highlighted Inter’s ability to control dangerous areas and limit clear-cut chances.

That was synonymous with this team last year.

Hopefully, the match against the Giallorossi wasn’t just a one-off.
