Inter are plotting to tweak their scheme under new coach Christian Chivu, switching from 3-5-2 to 3-4-2-1, and they intend to sign a muscular midfielder to be more balanced, and Morten Frendrup and Mandela Keita are the early options to address this new need, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The Genoa star has been on the radar of most Serie A’s top teams in multiple sessions. It’ll take a €20M offer to convince the Grifone. The Nerazzurri are also keen on Koni De Winter to shore up their defense. The Ligurians are unlikely to sell both in the same window.
Inter must sell before going after Frendrup, Keita, whom Chivu managed for a few months at Parma, or other midfielders with comparable skill sets. While Hakan Calhanoglu will stay, they have told Kristjan Asllani to leave. However, he’s hell-bent on continuing in Italy, and the offers haven’t been satisfying.
Piotr Zielinski could also be a casualty of the tactical adjustment. He was lackluster and plagued by injuries in his maiden season in Milan. On the other hand, he’s 31 and makes €4.5M, so it’s hard to offload him. He was close to Al Ahli in the past. Perhaps he’ll generate interest from Saudi Arabia again.
They need to purchase Ademola Lookman first, and, while they are confident, dealing with Atalanta is always a chore. They’ll obviously require muscles to sustain an uber-offensive formation with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez, but it’s only a theoretical problem for now. Since they are stacked in the midfield, the selection and rotation will be a conundrum if they proceed with this plan, even if a few of their men can play as no.10s.
