Monday’s reports claim that Inter have already reached a decision to activate the option to buy clause in the loan deal they negotiated with Serie A rivals Roma at the end of the January transfer window, which will see the Poland international join the Nerazzurri on a permanent basis in the summer.

Inter signed Zalewski on loan with an option to buy from Roma right at the end of the January transfer window, with roughly 30 minutes to go before the deadline.

Zalewski had been heading towards the end of his contract at the Stadio Olimpico, with an expiry date on June 30. He had also been linked with moves to Galatasaray and Olympique de Marseille, but is understood to have prioritised a move to Inter.

In the end, Zalewski extended his contract by a further 12 months, until the summer of 2026, and joined Inter on a six-month loan with an option to buy.

That meant that Roma avoided losing him on a free transfer, as he would either be signed by Inter, or return to the capital with another transfer window left to arrange his sale.

Reports from Calciomercato.com on Monday claim that Inter have already reached a decision to sign Zalewski permanently in the summer.

It is expected that a deal to sign the Poland international on a permanent basis will cost the Nerazzurri a fee in the region of €6.5m.

Monday’s reports claim that Zalewski will travel with the Nerazzurri squad for the Club World Cup in the United States, kicking off in mid-June.

What Inzaghi said about Zalewski

Part of the appeal behind Zalewski is his ability to cover in a number of different roles in Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2.

Not only is he capable of playing at both sides of wing-back, he was also tested in a new role on the right of the midfield three in place of Nicolo Barella for the 2-0 win over Torino this weekend. The Roma loanee opened the scoring after just 14 minutes.

“He was born for that role,” Inzaghi said in his post-match press conference.

“He is a quality player, he can play as a midfielder, a wing-back, even as a striker. We were missing a few players in the middle today, and along with the staff, we thought about playing him there because he grew up playing in that position.”
