Manchester United chiefs are willing to sanction Rasmus Hojlund’s exit this summer, despite the player publicly expressing his desire to see out his contract.

The lacklustre Erik ten Hag signing is currently tied to Old Trafford until 2028, plus the option of an additional year. However, the fact that he appeared to have regressed in his second season in England has prompted INEOS to consider a premature exit.

With six fewer Premier League goals to his name (four) in 2024/2025 than in his maiden campaign (10), Hojlund’s showings have left fans — and the key decision-makers — scratching their heads as to whether there’s a high-quality player in there.

Of course, at only 22 years old, you’d hope that what you’re seeing each week isn’t actually the finished product. Though, in his case, it begs the question: is there even enough in his performances to warrant such faith long-term?

Alas, all options are now being assessed, particularly since he has garnered concrete interest from Inter Milan.

Inter’s interest in Hojlund: The state of play

The Italian giants are floundering to reinforce their frontline following a calamitous display in the Champions League final last month, which saw them hit for five by Paris Saint-Germain without response.

Their scouts have landed on Hojlund as a suitable option to bolster new manager Cristian Chivu’s ranks, and numerous reports have suggested talks have already taken place between the club and the Dane to gauge the feasibility of a deal.

Again, while Hojlund has told the press he expects to see out his contract in M16, it’s also been claimed that he has privately green-lit a return to Serie A, where he spent one campaign with Atalanta before being pursued by United.

An obstacle in the prospective transfer is that United and Inter are demanding completely different terms; the latter are looking to take Hojlund on loan for 2025/2026 before potentially activating an option or obligation-to-buy clause this time next year, while the Reds, according to UnitedInFocus, will only facilitate the exchange if their £40 million price tag is met upfront.
