Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor was disappointed to see her side fall to a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City at The Joie Stadium in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday evening,

Vivianne Miedema got both goals for the hosts as Chelsea boss Bompastor tasted defeat for the first time in her tenure.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Bompastor admitted that it was a difficult night for her side and said that Chelsea will have to prepare well for the league meeting between the two clubs at the weekend.

“I think you have to say it was a difficult night,” Bompastor said. “Sometimes, it happens and my job is to now make sure that’s ok. I want to be disappointed about the performance and the result tonight but tomorrow, we are going to [focus on] the next game against City.

“We just need to make sure we get good analysis as a team from the performance. We also need to find the right way to rest in the next two days.”

The game was the second fixture of four that Manchester City and Chelsea will contest with each other in the space of 12 days. The first two games have been ultra-competitive and Bompastor expects the same from the final two games.

She said “I think City showed in the game on Saturday how good they were; I know they are a really good team with a lot of talent in the squad and we could see that tonight. Yeah, I’m expecting the next two games to be tough again.”

Miedema’s brace has given the advantage to Manchester City ahead of next week’s second leg but Bompastor says that her side are still hopeful of progressing to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals.

She said “I will stay confident going into the next leg because I know we have a lot of quality in the squad. Going into the next games, I will make sure we do everything we can do to be in the best position. The only thing we can do is make sure we have the right analysis from the game tonight. Yes, it will be difficult and now it’s even more difficult because City are two goals ahead of us but nothing is impossible.”

Chelsea’s 31-game unbeaten run came to an end in the North West but Bompastor was not bothered about that record; the most important thing for her is getting the right result in the second leg.

She said “I don’t care. My main focus going into the next game is making sure we turn things around and we win.

“Being unbeaten is nice but it doesn’t win a trophy. The most important thing for me is to make sure we win the right games, the important ones and win as many trophies as we can.”

Chelsea face Manchester City again on Sunday afternoon when the two sides contest a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at the Etihad Stadium.
