Darwin Nuñez is proving to be a confusing figure at Liverpool this season.

The Uruguayan striker is clearly not a starter in head coach Arne Slot’s eyes but a quality backup. In that role, he has scored only one goal and registered one assist in just over 300 minutes so far this season.

His only starts have come against Bournemouth in the league, against West Ham in the League Cup, and against Bologna in the Champions League. His goal against Bournemouth was a sublime effort from the right-hand edge of the box.

Yet the frustrating aspect of his game reared its head as his back-of-the-net effort against Bologna was ruled out for a clear offside.

And frustrating is the correct word as the £85m man was brought in to be the central anchor up top that Roberto Firmino previously occupied. Nuñez has shown flashes of brilliance that makes his streaky finishing difficult to watch.

Ian Wright weighs in

And this is the prevailing opinion in the media too. Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast with Musa Okwonga and Flo Lloyd-Hughes, football legend-turned-pundit Ian Wright commented, “Could you imagine if Nunez could score consistently?”.

Okwonga replied, “He doesn’t have to… as a squad player it takes the pressure off him, now he can do what he did against Newcastle, come on and just wreck shop and be lethal - taking that pressure off him will actually improve his finishing.”

Wright concurred, adding that, “Liverpool with a firing Darwin Nunez, I’m telling you, is a massive problem!”.

Wright further said that, if Darwin could regularly add goals, then Liverpool would be favourites for the league right now.

The Arsenal legend has a point, but it is yet to be tested against the teams at the top of the league. Liverpool have started out well - better than any other team - and have scored more than enough to justify their place at the top of the table.

But it is yet to be seen what happens if a team can stifle Salah, Diaz and Jota. Darwin needs to be next up.
