FLW's Millwall fan pundit has had his say on Duncan Watmore's future at the club.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Duncan Watmore is just one of a handful of players who are out of contract with Millwall in 2025, with the versatile forward potentially in the final four months of his career at The Den.
The 30-year-old spent seven years at the Stadium of Light, arriving on Wearside from non-league Altrincham in 2013 before departing at the end of his contract in 2020, joining Middlesbrough.
After a decent stint with Boro, he arrived at Millwall in January 2023, but he is now once again coming to the end of his current deal. He has started 19 of the 25 Championship games he has been involved in this term, but all six of his goal contributions came during the first seven league fixtures of the 2024/25 season.
The wideman has scored five goals and provided one assist in nine Championship appearances this season, which is already a greater return than the three goals and one assist he managed in the second tier throughout the entirety of last campaign.
But with the goals drying up, his future is now uncertain. That's despite the fact Watmore has always been a reliable performer, who works hard for the team. But with the end product not being there all the time, especially since the opening weeks of the season this year, it makes things less clear about the forward's future.
We asked FLW's Millwall fan pundit Lucas Ball for his thoughts on Watmore's future, and whether he is deserving an extension to his current deal.
He said: "I think with the players we have brought in during January, Duncan Watmore probably won't get a new contract.
"I would probably agree with that decision. He had a really good start to the season but his form this campaign has summed up his entire spell at Millwall, really.
"He's maddeningly inconsistent. He had a really good run at the start of the season and was our top scorer. He's certainly still up there in terms of our top scorer, given that we don't score that many goals.
"I don't think he's scored for a good few months now. He hasn't been contributing too much in terms of assists, either. He's not the most creative and often dribbles with his head down.
"He just runs into trouble. You can't say he's been someone that I have particularly enjoyed watching this season; for long spells, that is, as well.
"With the attacking players we have brought in, and the business we will hopefully be able to do over the summer, he is certainly a player that I wouldn't be looking to give a new deal to.
"His entire spell has been ups and downs, really. He has kept fit this season, which is a positive for him. So, hopefully, that can stand him in good stead in looking for a new club.
Watmore is deceivingly quick, and could cause significant problems for numerous second tier sides, especially with his work rate never in question.
.
The 30-year-old has already proven to be a key asset to Neil Harris earlier this season, even if Alex Neil and co. now have more options to choose from, thus making Watmore's future uncertain.
He can be utilised as a striker or wide forward, with that versatility likely to intrigue League One and other Championship sides this summer, should Millwall opt to allow his contract to end.
He has proven to be a handful for defenders in the second tier in 2024/25, with his ability to find himself in space in the box to fire in a shot in particularly on show in the early games in the season.
If he can keep contributing important goals, then surely the Lions will be looking to sign him up for at least another year soon. However, there may be thoughts from within that Watmore's past injury issues mean it's a risk and that an issue could crop up at any time.
