When Giorgi Mamardashvili walked through the gates of the AXA Training Centre, he wasn’t just stepping into a new chapter of his career, he was stepping into history. As the first Georgian to don the iconic Liverpool shirt, Mamardashvili carries the hopes of a nation and the expectations of a club that has just celebrated Premier League glory under Arne Slot.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper arrived from Valencia after agreeing the move last August, and made his first appearance in red during the 3-1 pre-season victory over Preston North End. But beyond the debut, it is Mamardashvili’s determination to honour Liverpool’s goalkeeper legacy that stands out.
Mamardashvili speaks with quiet pride about becoming Liverpool’s first Georgian player. “Of course I am very proud to be the first Georgian player for Liverpool, and I know how much this means for my family and Georgian people as well,” he shared.
The reaction back home was electric. The day the deal was announced, Mamardashvili was flooded with messages. “It was amazing in Georgia. So many messages I received and everyone was so happy and excited,” he recalled, smiling.
From his early days on the pitches of Georgia to his four formative years in Spain, Mamardashvili has crafted a path built on resilience. He arrived in Valencia at just 20, unable to speak Spanish or English, but adapted quickly. “I quickly understood that if I wanted to play, I had to learn, I had to adapt and I had to work on myself every single day,” he reflected.

Liverpool’s goalkeeping lineage runs deep, from Jerzy Dudek’s miracle in Istanbul to Pepe Reina’s assured hands and Alisson Becker’s world-class presence today. Mamardashvili knows the weight of the gloves he now wears. “Liverpool has a big goalkeeper legacy and I want to try to write my own chapter in this goalkeepers’ legacy,” he said.
His admiration for Alisson is clear. “What I can tell about Ali, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and I am so happy to work with him,” he said, eager to learn from the Brazilian. Yet, Mamardashvili is not here to merely observe. “Of course it will be a challenge. I like challenges and I’m here to just give my best and help the team,” he affirmed.
Arne Slot’s arrival has transformed Liverpool, guiding them to a Premier League title in his first season. Mamardashvili followed that triumph closely. “Of course it was amazing, seeing the fans and how they celebrated together. It was like a reminder how much Liverpool means to so many people,” he shared.
Now part of Slot’s squad, Mamardashvili feels the energy of a team hungry for more. His pre-season debut offered a taste of Anfield’s passion. “It was a really proud moment in my life and it gave me real motivation to keep improving, keep developing and give everything for this club,” he said.
With a calm and focused style, Mamardashvili describes himself as “a very calm, concentrated goalkeeper” and one who is “very fast and quick in the goal.” But perhaps more importantly, he understands the responsibility he carries. “I know the responsibilities that come with wearing this shirt. This badge means so much to so many people. I’m here just to give my best in every training session, every match to help the team and earn the trust of our fans.”
And to the people of Georgia? “I want to sincerely thank all the Georgian fans. I’m proud to represent Georgia at this great club and I’ll give my all to make you even prouder.”
With a clear head, a grateful heart and gloves ready, Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to carve his own chapter at Liverpool under Arne Slot’s reign.
