FC Barcelona showcased their ability to compete at the highest level throughout this recent season. While the official campaign might be over, it left a positive image of what Hansi Flick’s team is capable of. However, Barcelona is only able to perform like that thanks to good competition.
No player should feel secure in their position within the starting eleven, and it should instead be a matter of merit and consistency. Only by doing that has Hansi Flick enabled this team to play at a high level and do so consistently throughout the season.
Unfortunately, while this is the case for most players, certain members of the squad are simply unfortunate. On one side, there is a legitimate case to be made with under-performing players like Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, with the German goalkeeper now possibly being replaced by Joan Garcia.
However, on the other hand, there are some players who get very limited opportunities despite promising performances. One such player is Pablo Torre, a Barcelona midfielder who is currently on international duty with the Under-21 Spanish National team.
While speaking with SPORT, he revealed that he believed that Hansi Flick had not treated him fairly this season and that he conveyed this message to the coach himself as well:
“I really think I earned more playing time. Yes, there was a lot of competition, but I don’t think it was fair. I told him that directly in a conversation we had.”
Moreover, he also acknowledged that the lack of playing time also has an impact on his level heading into international duty:
“It’s true you don’t come in with the same rhythm, but I’ve been training on my own a lot to stay in top shape for whenever I get the chance—whether that’s with Barça or Spain. I’ve been feeling really good lately and I’m confident I’ll get even better.”

At the same time, however, he also confessed that he did feel upset due to the lack of opportunities that he was given and that he felt like he did not look out of place on the pitch, even saying that he did not always understand Flick’s decisions:
“Exactly. I don’t think I looked out of place when I was on the pitch. The coach makes his choices, and there weren’t many injuries, which makes it even harder for him. I respect his decisions, but many times I didn’t understand them.”
Torre even went on to subtly criticise the Barcelona coach when discussing the kind gesture that fellow teammate Gavi displayed in order to let him get a few minutes in a game:
“Gavi and I have a special bond. He’s always looked out for me and thought I deserved those final minutes. Honestly, I wasn’t thrilled. We were winning by a lot, there were 20 minutes left… I think Flick could’ve made better decisions, like I said. But it is what it is.”
It did not end there, however, as the young Spaniard once again took a rather subtle dig at Hansi Flick when speaking about the praise he received from Wojciech Szczesny regarding his skills in training:
“That made me happy, honestly. It shows my teammates value me too. If the coach doesn’t see it, well, that’s not my fault.”
While he may be contracted to Barcelona until 2026, Torre’s time at the club has hardly been full of smooth sailings. Extremely limited playing time, even when he has been available, has certainly been a positive experience for him so far.
