Arne Slot admits he could not have expected such a positive start to life as Liverpool manager after his side beat reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at Anfield.

Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah scored to give Slot an 18th victory from his first 20 games as Reds boss in all competitions, losing just one of those games.

Liverpool are nine points clear of Arsenal and Chelsea, and 11 clear of City after their latest victory, and asked if he could have expected a start like the one he has made, he told Sky Sports: “I can believe it, because it’s happening at the moment, but I don’t think anyone including me would have predicted this.

“I knew that Jurgen (Klopp) left the team in a very good place but to do this with all the difficult teams we’ve faced already is something you cannot predict before the season.

“But like I said, we are not the only ones. Arsenal yesterday as well, Chelsea today, and I saw City playing. They will come back. These teams have so much quality and they can have the same run as us so we have to stay sharp and focused.”

Slot also hailed his side for their “near perfect” performance against Pep Guardiola’s side: “If you want to win against City, like I said before the game, you have to be perfect in every part of the game.

“They bring so many problems to you and I think we came close to being perfection and that’s the only way you can beat a team like City.”
