Journalist Alan Nixon has claimed that Hull City could be planning an attempt to bring the former Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie back to England after a year in Spain with Las Palmas, which is set to end with his club being relegated from La Liga.

Hull are rebuilding themselves following a disappointing season which ended with them only avoiding relegation on goal difference from Luton Town.

They are also currently in the market for a new manager after sacking Ruben Selles on the 15th May.

McBurnie is believed to have a relegation release clause in his contract which could facilitate such a move even though he still has two years to run on his contract in Spain.

McBurnie signed for Las Palmas on a three-year contract upon the expiry of his contract at Sheffield United in July 2024, but his season in Spain has only yielded two goals from 27 appearances.

The team are one place off the bottom of La Liga with two games to play and will be relegated should they fail to win either of their final two games of the season.

Without this relegation being confirmed, the clause wouldn't be activated, meaning that a fee would be payable if Hull wanted him because he still has two years left to run on his contract.

But relegation would make that irrelevant and would make him a much more attractive proposition to the Championship club.

Over his five years with Sheffield United, Oli McBurnie proved that he has got what it takes at that level, even though he's never had a particularly high goal-scoring tally.

He was at Bramall Lane for five years after signing for the Blades from Swansea in August 2019 on a four-year deal for a fee of £17.5 million, potentially rising to £20 million with add-ons.

He made 146 League appearances over five years for them, scoring 26 goals, with half of which came in their 2022/23 promotion season, when they finished second behind runaway winners Burnley.

His goal-scoring figures for his last two seasons with the club were his most impressive.

This would be an ambitious signing for Hull, but at 28 years of age, McBurnie has earned admirers in Spain and there's no reason to believe that he wouldn't be a valuable addition to their squad, as well as sending a message to the rest of the division that Acun Ilicali has no intention of cutting it as fine over relegation again as his team did last season.
