Howe: 'We have to do our part' | OneFootball

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says his side "have to do our part" on Sunday as their quest for a place in Europe concludes at Brentford on Sunday (kick-off 4pm BST).

The Magpies head to the Gtech Community Stadium to bring the curtain down on a 2023/24 campaign that could yet have a memorable ending as they bid to secure a second successive season in continental competition.

And while elements of their fate remain in the hands of other sides, Howe says his charges are 'determined to finish on a high' and play their part by securing a win over the Bees.

Here are some of the topics that were up for discussion on Friday morning when Howe - who is hoping Anthony Gordon will be fit to travel to the capital after he took a knock in the challenge from Sofyan Amrabat which sparked a penalty appeal on Wednesday night's defeat at Manchester United - met the media for the final time this term:

On the final day...

'It's a big last day for us, there's no denying that.

'We go into the game knowing we have to do our part, which is try and win the game. Then we're in the hands of other clubs. The players are determined to finish on a high.'

On the fitness of Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon, who was denied a spot kick in midweek...

'We anticipate he (Wilson) will be fit for Sunday.

'We will wait and see how he (Gordon) is today. I'm not 100 per cent sure as I sit here now exactly how he is. Certainly that tackle left a mark on him.'

On Lewis Hall, who scored his first Premier League goal at Old Trafford on Wednesday...

'I think for any player when you come to a new club, it's natural there's going to be a settling-in period.

'He's done really well to commit and continue to commit and have consistency in his work, even when no doubt he was frustrated that things weren't happening quicker than he'd wanted. He did really well at Old Trafford and showed a lot of maturity. I'm delighted with where his game is at.'

On United's away form...

'I think we've had highlights and had some good performances but it's summed up by Wednesday where I thought we played OK.

'The performance generally was good - we created chances and we looked a good team, but we weren't ruthless enough to take the game away from our opponent. For next year we have to get that away form right.'
