Rasmus Hojlund’s first-leg goal gives Danes advantage as Cristiano Ronaldo hopes to inspire fightback
Denmark hold a slender lead over Portugal ahead of their Nations League quarter-final decider in Lisbon tonight.
Brian Riemer’s side head to the Estadio Jose Alvalade with a 1-0 in advantage in the two-legged tie thanks to a late effort from resurgent Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund in Copenhagen on Thursday evening.
The biggest talking point from that game was Hojlund copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous ‘Siu’ goal celebration in front of the man himself, later insisting that he was not mocking a player that he considered as his “idol” and “the world’s best footballer”.
Ronaldo said of the incident: “No problem, for me it's not a problem. I knew it's not because he does not have respect for me, of course not.
“I'm smart enough to understand that not only him but around the world other sportspeople do my celebration. For me it's an honour. But I hope tomorrow he can see my celebration.”
It remains to be seen if Ronaldo and Co can exact their revenge back on home soil on Sunday and progress through to the last four, with the losers set to join Greece, Scotland and Belarus in Group C for 2026 World Cup qualifying.
The winners will land in Group F, along with Hungary, the Republic of Ireland and Armenia.
Without Diogo Costa it could have been an even tougher challenge, with the Porto goalkeeper saving a first-half penalty from Christian Eriksen at Parken after handball had been given inside the box against Chelsea’s Renato Veiga.
TV channel and live stream: Portugal vs Denmark is not one of the Nations League games that is being shown via Amazon Prime Video this week.
Instead, fans can catch the action live and for free online via the Viaplay International YouTube channel. Kick-off in Lisbon is at 7:45pm GMT.
