Defending champions take on in-form Swedes in last eight
The Lionesses’ European Championships title defence continues this evening when they face Sweden in the quarter-finals at the Stadion Letzigrund.
Sarina Wiegman’s side return to Zurich after their 6-1 thrashing of Wales in St Gallen in the final Group D game.
England finished second in their group behind France, who defeated the holders 2-1 in their opening match.
Now, they face a side in red-hot form, after Peter Gerhardsson’s team won all three of their group games.
The Scandinavians beat Denmark 1-0 first, before decimating Poland and Germany 3-0 and 4-1 respectively.
Wiegman spoke after the Wales win about how the Swedes were a “hard team to beat”, and that the Lionesses would have to be their best to beat a “very powerful” and speedy counter-attacking side.
England themselves have rediscovered their winning formula after that narrow defeat to Les Bleues, as they defeated the Netherlands 4-0 in Zurich before their hammering of their fellow Home Nation.
