Chelsea host Everton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon in another crucial clash in the race for Champions League football.

With Chelsea chasing a top-five place, they face a resurgent Toffees side that have excelled since the re-appointment of former boss David Moyes.

Chelsea claimed bragging rights in west London in their last match with Pedro Neto scoring an added-time winner against rivals Fulham. Everton conceded two late goals to undo what had been a staunch performance against Champions Man City.

Blues boss Enzo Maresca will be watching this one from the stands as he serves a touchline suspension following over-zealous celebrations during the match against Fulham. Everton fans will be dismayed to have seen the ever-present James Tarkowski suffer a season-ending injury against Man City, meanwhile.

Chelsea come into this game after a rip-roaring late turnaround to steal three points at Craven Cottage. Academy product Tyrique George came off the bench to level proceedings late on before Pedro Neto scored the winner in added time. They have won just one of the last three league games, however, having drawn the other two.

Everton may have suffered a late defeat against Man City last time out but what might be more difficult to take was the season-ending injury to James Tarkowski, who requires surgery on his thigh. Since the return of David Moyes the Toffees have steadily climbed the Premier League table and now findsthemselves in 13th, joint on points with Manchester United and Wolves. They have won just one of their last eight, however.

What’s been said?

Enzo Maresca on Chelsea’s season: “Compared to the last two years this has not been a failure,” he said. “How many times in the last years have Chelsea been in the Champions League? Zero. How many times this season? Almost all season. Is it an improvement or not?

“This season is already an improvement because we spend all season in there [the qualification positions], now we’re going to try our best to finish there.

“We are happy to finish there. Is it enough? No, because we want to compete for titles, but compared to the last two years it’s quite clear there’s an improvement.

“If you want to see it, you see it, if you don’t want to see it, you don’t see it. It depends which way. I see that.”

Toffees’ boss David Moyes knows his side are in for a tough match against Chelsea, he said: “We’ve not got a great record going to Stamford Bridge over the years either, so from that point of view we know we’re up for a tough game.”

But Moyes was keen to point out their recent performances against Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool: “I think we’ve done very well and this period of games has been a difficult one.

“I go in there with real confidence and belief that we can go and try to make something happen again.”
