How the Portuguese media reacted to Viktor Gyokeres first Arsenal match

Viktor Gyokeres endured a poor debut as Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United in their opening Premier League fixture of the season.

The match was a difficult one for the Gunners, who were expected by some to drop points in the contest. Despite United looking the stronger side for long spells, Arsenal managed to earn all three points and began their campaign in the best possible way. The win provides momentum and confidence for the season ahead, even if the performance left room for improvement.

Gyokeres struggles in first outing

Gyokeres started the match as Arsenal’s leading forward, with Kai Havertz now behind him in the attacking pecking order. Expectations were high given his reputation and the investment made to bring him to London. However, the striker had a day to forget. United enjoyed more possession and control, leaving Gyokeres short of service throughout the encounter.

According to Sport Witness, he was criticised heavily, with one outlet reporting: “Gyökeres did not enchant: very little, non-existent. It was not for this version of Gyökeres that the Gunners made an investment that can reach €76m.”

This assessment underlines the disappointment surrounding his first performance in an Arsenal shirt, especially given the fee involved. Supporters will hope it proves only a temporary setback as he adapts to a new league and new demands.

While it was not the dream debut he or the club would have hoped for, this was only his first competitive appearance.
