Gareth Taylor has spoken about the disagreements he had with Chloe Kelly when he was Manchester City manager.

Kelly was vocal about her displeasure at her lack of game time while at City, pushing for a move away for the club ahead of the transfer deadline in January this year.

She wrote on Instagram at the time: “With the Euros fast approaching, this summer is a huge one and I want to be in a position to give it my best shot to represent my country.

“However, to be dictated whom I can and can’t join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career by my mental wellbeing.

“The situation has been dragged on for too long, it’s disappointing and not right.”

Taylor: ‘Players want to play’

Kelly made a last-minute loan move to Arsenal and has since signed for them permanently, while Taylor was appointed as Liverpool manager earlier this month, having left City in March.

And reflecting on the situation now, Gareth Taylor told the BBC: “You understand as a head coach that you are not going to make everyone happy in your team. That’s normal.

“Players want to play. I understand that. I had it many times myself when I was a professional and I was out of the team – I had my beef with it as well.

“I just always tried to remain as professional as possible. Now, on the other side of it as a head coach, my job is to select what I think is the team that gives us the best opportunity. Sometimes I get it right, sometimes I get it wrong.

“You will always get that kind of situation but you don’t want it being played out in the public. For me, it felt like through all of that time, I was true to my role.”

Taylor: ‘It’s been really disappointing’

Taylor had said at the time: “It’s been really disappointing to come to this and the ending it transpired to.

“We never like to hear a player has not had a good experience of being at a club and I’m sure that’s not the case for the whole period, maybe just this more recent period from not playing.

“We’re in a selection-based business where difficult decisions have to be made for the betterment of the team. Sometimes players can fall on the sharp end of that.”

After securing her move away from City, Kelly won the Women’s Champions League with Arsenal in May.

She then repeated her heroics of 2022 when she scored the winning penalty for England in a shoot-out against Spain to win the Women’s Euros again this summer.
