Leeds have once again been linked with a potential reunion with one of their own
Links have once again surfaced between Leeds United and their former academy graduate Kalvin Phillips, as the midfielder eyes a fresh start away from Manchester City.
The boyhood United supporter rose through the ranks at Elland Road, making his senior debut for the club in a 4-3 defeat to Wolves in April 2015, before going on to make 234 appearances for the club in total as he became a staple of the club's midfield, starring under Marcelo Bielsa as the club ended a 16-year Premier League exile, which eventually led to being called up to England's EURO 2020 squad under Gareth Southgate the following year.
After swapping West Yorkshire for Manchester City in a £42.5m move in 2022, Phillips' career trajectory hasn't continued in the smoothest of fashions despite also featuring for the Three Lions at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, making just 31 appearances for the Blues thus far, with his current loan spell at Ipswich Town following a disastrous temporary stint at West Ham.
And, not for the first time, the 29-year-old has once again been linked with a return to Leeds, who currently top the Championship with eight matches remaining, with the Whites level on points with Sheffield United and two points clear of third-placed Burnley.
Daniel Farke currently has plenty of midfield options to call upon, and FLW has compared Phillips' current estimated salary with those on Paraag Marathe's payroll at present.
Alongside the initial links which were reported by The Sun, Football Insider have also revealed that Phillips is pushing for a return to LS11, with City "willing to take a substantial loss" on the hefty fee garnered three years ago, with the midfielder almost halfway through a six-year contract at the Etihad Stadium.
It was also reported by TEAMtalk that an offer as low as £20m could tempt the current Premier League champions into accepting a deal.
According to estimated figures from Capology, the 31-time international is said to be earning a weekly sum of £150,000-per-week and £7.8m figure in annual terms, which is said to be a £120,000-per-week upgrade on the earnings throughout his final contract at Leeds, which was penned in September 2019.
Of course, Phillips is currently on loan at Portman Road as Kieran McKenna's side fought off competition from Everton and Fulham for his services, although the temporary switch is set to conclude in two months' time, with the Tractor Boys currently nine points from safety with as many matches remaining.
Sky Sports reported that his parent club are still paying a portion of his wages this campaign, although the exact figure split has not yet been revealed.
In 20 appearances thus far for the Blues, Phillips' solitary goal came in the FA Cup Third Round success over Bristol Rovers.
At present, United have five players who are capable of fulfilling Phillips' role at the base of midfield in the form of Ao Tanaka, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rothwell, Josuha Guilavogui and Ilia Gruev.
Ampadu, who joined the club for a reported £7m fee in July 2023, is the top earner out of the quintet with an estimated salary of £40,000-per-week, which is still light years behind Phillips' aforementioned figures.
Tanaka - who has proven to be one of the Championship's signings of the season for a £2.95m fee from Fortuna Düsseldorf - is said to be taking home a £25,000-per-week sum, whilst Guilavogui - who signed a short-term contract in October - and Gruev are tied at a respective £15,000-per-week figure.
And whilst Rothwell has been a strong addition to the Whites' midfield, the AFC Bournemouth loanee is said to be earning just £8,000-per-week, with it recently being reported that Leeds may have to pay £7.5m and offer a £30,000-per-week package to the 30-year-old in order to strike a permanent transfer.
These figures highlight how ambitious Leeds would have to be in terms of wages to lure Phillips back to Elland Road regardless of any sentimental value, as he would also top the current payroll by some £80,000 ahead of Patrick Bamford.
