Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has confirmed he will miss "a few weeks" after picking up a muscle injury in the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa.

Maguire pulled up shortly before half-time in the Premier League fixture and was replaced by summer signing Matthijs de Ligt, with manager Erik ten Hag admitting immediately after the final whistle he was unsure just how severe the England international's issue is.

In a post on social media, Maguire shed some more light on his injury.

"Frustrated to pick up an injury at the weekend, will be a few weeks on the sideline for me but I'll come back stronger," he wrote.

Maguire has lost his place in the United starting lineup this season, with Ten Hag preferring De Ligt and Argentina international Lisandro Martinez, but he was restored to the starting lineup against Villa to try and steady a leaky defence that had conceded three goals in consecutive games.

Impressing alongside another resurgent star, 36-year-old Jonny Evans, Maguire's return was cut short through injury, which also robbed him of the chance to force his way into the England setup.

Maguire was initially left out of Lee Carsley's squad for the October international break but was tipped to return after Villa defender Ezri Konsa was forced to withdraw through injury.

Carsley has pledged his support to Maguire, previously a prominent player under Gareth Southgate, insisting his international career remains very much alive despite his latest omission.
