Gavi’s comeback from his ACL injury towards the end of last year was a special one for Barcelona fans across the globe as they longed to see him on the field after close to a year out.
The youngster indeed came back strong and Hansi Flick was careful not to rush him back after the long-term injury.
After a slow integration, he finally looked to have got back to his best version in terms of fitness but never really pushed for a starting spot.
With the competition for a starting spot being sky-high, the youngster struggled to make a case for himself to be a starting attacking midfielder over Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez – the position Flick saw best suited for him.
As relayed by AS in a recent update, Gavi’s performance in Barcelona’s last two games of the season saw him embrace a different dynamic that may well change his situation next season.

Against Athletic Club and Villarreal, the youngster played as part of the double pivot. In the final game against the Basque side, in particular, he was ever-so-dominant in the midfield and a force to reckon with.
The 20-year-old thus ended the season on a high and with a cliffhanger, asking the manager to give him more regular minutes in the deeper midfield.
Needless to say, he could well be seen playing as a pivot more often next season. Flick and Deco are aware of Gavi’s ability to adapt and have confidence that he will be back to his imperial best soon.
The deeper midfield position brings the best out of him and maximizes his profile if paired with the right partner. And Flick, moving forward, could utilise the La Masia gem as part of the double pivot.
The coming season, thus, will be a massive one for Gavi as he will look to continue his great form and move up the pecking order.
