FC Barcelona faced Athletic Club in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup last night and emerged 2-0 winners from a tough game, with Gavi and Lamine Yamal ending up on the scoresheet. The team now awaits a final against one of Real Madrid or Mallorca.
Flick named a strong starting line-up against the Basque side with Gavi occupying the number 10 role. What this meant was that Frenkie de Jong was once again left on the bench and had to make an impact off the bench to make his case.
The German coach did bring Frenkie on in the second half, replacing Gavi and occupying the number 10 role. He almost immediately created a goal for his side but soon enough, he made an error that he was very lucky to get out of unscathed.
Now, as per Fichajes, Hansi Flick has had enough with the Dutchman and has decided to let him leave. The report claims that the duo’s relationship has reached a stage of no return and the 27-year-old might not be at the club for much longer.
The Dutchman played a loose ball in a dangerous position that fell right into the path of Inaki Williams who went on a run and scored for Athletic Bilbao. Frenkie was extremely fortunate that the ball that he played came off an opponent’s foot, which led to the goal being ruled out for offside.
Frenkie de Jong is a walking liability right now. The moment he comes onto the pitch, my heart sinks – often looks like he’s scared to receive the ball. His confidence is shattered. I strongly believe everyone needs a fresh start, a move away is the only way. https://t.co/WWB40GScg0— Neal 🇦🇺 (@NealGardner_) January 9, 2025
However, if not for that stroke of luck, the Basque side would have gone 2-1 with less than 10 minutes to go into the game and as we have often seen in football, one goal is all it takes for the momentum to completely shift to the other team.
Frenkie could have then put Barcelona 3-0 up after a smart pull-back from Ferran Torres and to be fair to the Dutchman, he did come up with a good shot that was cleared off the line. Sadly for him though, it does look like his Barcelona career is panning out this way.
When the Dutchman does something well, he doesn’t get the reward for it but when he makes a mistake, it really gets accentuated. Let’s wait and see if Frenkie can do anything to resurrect his career and only time will tell us how it goes.
