With Manchester United expected to sign a top striker this summer, nearly every fan has a vision of the ideal forward to reignite the team’s attacking firepower.
Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as a top striker choice among the Old Trafford faithful. His familiarity with head coach Ruben Amorim and his prolific season with Sporting CP make him an attractive option to address United’s goal-scoring concerns.
However, caution has been advised regarding the anticipated move for the former Brighton forward.
Legendary United defender Rio Ferdinand, speaking candidly to The Mirror, shared his view on the sort of striker his former club truly needs.
Like many, he feels neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee has done enough to spark United’s attack into life: “I think it’s been evident that Hojlund came in for huge money and hasn’t hit the ground running, has struggled really. Zirkzee hasn’t done much better than him, really.”
Instead, he believes United need a striker whom Amorim can trust implicitly, a number nine he can say, “I can pin my hat on him. I can rely on him.”
While Gyokeres, who is fresh from a staggering 54 goals and 13 assists in 52 matches, might fit that mould on paper, Ferdinand remains unconvinced.
Yes, he acknowledges the 27-year-old is a gifted striker. But after surveying the market, the ex-England international believes United would be wiser to target Victor Osimhen.
“I think Gyokeres, everyone’s talking about him. Again, I think if I’m looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I’d probably pick Osimhen because of that experience.
“He’s shown he’s done it in multiple leagues now. And he’s done it internationally as well. I think he’s a top-class number nine who, again, the young players will be able to learn from.
“I’m not saying that Gyokeres would fail. I’m just saying that if I had a preference, I would go there.”
Like Gyokeres, Osimhen is among Europe’s most feared forwards.
The Nigerian international is coming off a campaign that saw him score 37 goals and register eight assists in 41 appearances. Yet there is a notable difference in pedigree. While Osimhen has delivered consistently in France, Germany, Italy, and Turkey, the Sporting hitman has only truly dominated the Portuguese football scene.
If top-flight experience is the benchmark, it is easy to see why Ferdinand prefers Osimhen over a gamble on Gyokeres.
Intriguingly, while the race for Osimhen remains open following his decision to snub a move to the Saudi Pro League, the chase for Gyokeres is becoming more complicated.
The Swedish striker is a top target for Arsenal. With the North London club renewing their push for his signature, INEOS may be encouraged to pivot toward the Osimhen route. The 26-year-old has a £64 million release clause.
In any case, United’s new number nine must be the right fit, and surely Amorim knows this is one decision he cannot afford to get wrong.
