Gus Poyet says new Spurs boss Thomas Frank has a big job on his hands for the club to bounce back from what he described as an “embarrassing” last season.
Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs won their first trophy in 17 years by lifting the Europa League after beating Manchester United in May, but in the Premier League they were not so successful.
The Australian was sacked and replaced by Frank because of the club’s poor league performance, which saw them finish 17th with 22 losses, a record Premier League total for the club.
When former Spurs player Poyet, who spent three years at the club between 2001 and 2004 and later served as assistant manager, was asked about what they need to do to get back up the table, he told Hayters TV in association with William Hill: “Consistency. You said it.
“I mean, in the Premier League last year, the results, they were embarrassing. So I think that at the end of the year, the win in Europe, it was tremendous, it was exceptional and I know how much it means for the fans, and that is something that is always welcome.
“But the other side you cannot forget because it was awful. So consistency will be will be the aim this season.”
The Uruguyan also indicated that there needs to be a mentality shift at Tottenham if they are going to to continue to win silverware.
“It didn’t look to me that they were happy as a team, it was not a team that you will see before the game and they look like they’re going to enjoy today,” he said.
“I think they were more worried about how they are going to win instead of just playing. I give you this example because I have given it a few times, and I love to say it, and I’m sorry, it’s about Chelsea.
“When I was in the tunnel at Chelsea in the tunnel before the game, and I look around me and I see Dennis Wise, Roberto Di Matteo, and Gianfranco Zola, I look at the opposition and I said you have got a problem today, because we going to play.”
Poyet says he admired Frank at Brentford but believes that his new side do not have the players to play the same way that he did at the Bees.
“If I look at the players, that play at Brentford in the last three, four or five years, I cannot see more than three similar profiles at Spurs,” Poyet said.
“I think they are totally different players, different characteristics, maybe better quality technically, but not that powerful.”
Tottenham face a huge test on Wednesday night as they take on reigning Champions League winners PSG in the UEFA Super Cup.
