Gus Hamer has responded to Matty Godden's Instagram post following his goal in Charlton's 4-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers.

Gustavo Hamer has praised his former Coventry City teammate, Matty Godden, after the forward found the back of the net once again for Charlton Athletic on Easter Monday.

The 33-year-old scored the Addicks' third goal in a huge 4-0 victory over fellow automatic promotion-chasing side, Wycombe Wanderers, at Adams Park. The gap to the Chairboys is now down to just two points, while Wrexham sit four points clear of the South London outfit in second.

Nevertheless, Nathan Jones' team make the long journey to Wales on Saturday to face the Red Dragons in what is set to be an extremely dramatic afternoon in League One as the battle for the play-offs, relegation and promotion all start to come to a head.

There are just two games to go in the 2024/25 campaign, and Charlton will be helping that they can take it to the final day with a win at the STōK Cae Ras, while the home side could confirm their third successive promotion if they take all three points and Wycombe fail to beat Leyton Orient.

Hamer sends message to Godden following Charlton win

While Monday was a disappointing day for Hamer, as his Sheffield United side were beaten 2-1 by Burnley to confirm both Leeds United's and the Clarets' promotion to the Premier League, it was an incredible one for his ex-Coventry teammate.

Lloyd Jones and Luke Berry gave the Addicks a 2-0 lead heading into half-time before Godden netted his 16th League One goal of the season, while Karoy Anderson was able to complete the rout four minutes later.

Charlton's form has been seriously impressive in the last few weeks, winning five of their last six matches, with the only blip on that run coming in a 2-2 draw at home to Lincoln City.

Excitement is building at The Valley, and confidence is flowing through Jones' team with the hope that they can return to the Championship for the first time since 2020. Their talisman, Godden, has been crucial to their promotion push, and he praised the Addicks' supporters on Instagram following Monday's win.

He wrote:

Hamer was one of many to respond to the striker, sending a very honest two-word message: "Absolute legend❤️".

Charlton are showing their strength at the right time

The Addicks have been involved in the fight for the top throughout the majority of the season, but more recently they have started to push for the second automatic promotion spot and few will want to meet them in the play-offs if they do miss out.

Monday's victory was a true example of the character that Charlton have shown since Jones took over at The Valley halfway through the 2023/24 campaign. They were clinical when going forward and resolute defensively, with Wycombe simply not being able to live with their attacking threat.

With just two games to go, the Addicks know that they have to pick up at least four points to have a chance at winning promotion, but winning on Saturday could put just enough pressure on Wrexham to have a wobble in their final game of the season.
