In the Premier League, Portugal teammate and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was among those to pay tribute to Jota.

“Friend, colleague and companion in a thousand battles,” he wrote. “It is difficult to understand how it is possible for someone to leave so soon.

“May you and your brother find the peace you need to look after those you lost so soon and suddenly. My condolences to your entire family.”

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella discussed Jota’s death in his press conference ahead of the Blues’ Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras.

“It’s a bad moment,” he began. “We send all our love to the family, the wife, the kids, and I do it from me, the whole Chelsea squad, and football. Football is not important at times like this. The most important thing is that we show respect and all our love.

“I saw it as soon as I woke up. It was a difficult moment because these things can happen to all of us in any moment and then you start to think if you don’t feel good, or you don’t give 100%, or feel s--- when these things happen, it’s important to be happy and live life every day.”

Cristiano Ronaldo offered a tribute to international teammate Jota, who admitted growing up idolising the Portugal superstar, who he replaced off the bench to make his international debut.

Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi also added his own message of support. “QEPD,” he wrote, referencing a Spanish initialism which translates to “may they rest in peace”.
