Girona star Paulo Gazzaniga on Wednesday night secured for himself a place in the history books of Spanish football.

Unfortunately for the shot-stopper, however, as much came for altogether less than positive reasons.

Girona, of course, marked their return to action a short time ago, making the trip to France for a meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

The matchup marked the Catalans’ first-ever in the Champions League.

And, with mere minutes remaining in the action in Paris, Míchel’s troops found themselves on the verge of what would have been a historic result.

Girona held their heavyweight hosts at bay for a full 90 minutes, keeping PSG’s star-studded attack from opening the scoring.

Just when it appeared as though the clash was set to peter out into a draw, however, disaster struck for the visitors.

After a cross came in from the left, the aforementioned Paulo Gazzaniga allowed the ball to squeeze under his body, and into the empty net behind him.

The 32-year-old was subsequently left in tears, as the costly nature of his error quickly became apparent.

And, as alluded to above, in the process, Gazzaniga secured for himself an unwanted place in the history books of European competition.

As per statisticians Opta:

‘Girona’s Paulo Gazzaniga has become the first goalkeeper from a Spanish team to score an own goal in the history of the Champions League.’
