Girona eyeing audacious loan move for another Barcelona defender | OneFootball

The powers that be at La Liga outfit Girona have set their sights on the most audacious of loan moves, for a central figure in the backline of Catalan neighbours Barcelona.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who point towards Pau Cubarsí as being the player in question.

The name of stopper Cubarsí has of course taken its place front and centre in Barcelona across the day to date, after the Spanish international put pen to paper on a new contract with the Blaugrana.

And yet, mere hours later, the subject of his immediate future has come back to the fore.

This comes amid claims that Girona have identified Cubarsí as an absolute leading target for the 2024/25 campaign.

Aware that Barcelona would under no circumstances be open to the possibility of a permanent transfer, the Blanquivermells have proposed a season-long loan deal.

Xavi, for his part, has already made clear to the board at the Camp Nou that he will not under any circumstances give the green light to such an operation, depending on Cubarsí as a crucial component in his XI for next season.

Sport, though, highlight the case of Eric García, whom Xavi also wanted to keep hold of last summer, only to see the defender link up with Girona on loan in the final days of the market.

A similar move for Cubarsí this time round, in all reality, is beyond unlikely.

But a Girona outfit who have made a living on defying the odds of late will not give up without a fight…
