AC Milan made a switch to a three-back formation, as many of their Serie A rivals have done recently, and a report states that they must continue with ‘the way’.

The change to a 3-4-3 has seemingly been in the works for some time, with Sergio Conceicao using the system at Porto occasionally. With such an impressive result, though, there is certainly an argument that the experiment can continue.

In fact, it is an experiment that has worked so well for others already, as Il Giornale (via Milan News) write, and they will face those oppositions shortly, which may be a test for how feasible the three-back can be.

Gian Piero Gasperini and Simone Inzaghi, probably the most identifiable leaders of the system in Italy are both up next for Conceicao, and this is where the turning point may be found, given they both ‘would agree’ that the formation is a ‘turning point’.

We already know that the Portuguese had considered using the system against Napoli, who also have heavily used the three defender system this season, but opted against it. However, with the test drive going so well, and training with the motions progressing continuously, it is not far fetched to imagine some consistency in the system.
