Christian Wück’s side maintained Germany’s flawless start to Women’s Euro campaigns, but they had to rely on second-half goals against a team playing a first-ever fixture in a major tournament.

Meanwhile, Denmark lost to neighbours Sweden in Friday’s other Group C fixture. Since head-to-head is the first tiebreaker, Germany will secure a quarter-final spot with a win on Tuesday.

The two teams last met in the inaugural UEFA Nations League tournament a couple of years ago. Denmark stunned Germany in the opening fixture with a 2-0 victory, but Die Nationalelf won the return fixture 3-0 in Rostock to progress from the group stage.

Similarly, Germany failed to win their first game in this year’s Nations League, but they’re now in the semi-finals after six straight wins. Before they aim to improve on their third-placed finish in France, Germany will compete for their first European championship title since 2013.

Germany won eight trophies in only 13 editions of the Women’s Euro, but they missed out on back-to-back titles for the first time since the first two editions in the 1980s. Similarly, results haven’t been the same on the global stage as they were eliminated in the group stage of the 2023 World Cup.

On Friday, they started their campaign with a win over Poland thanks to second-half goals from Jule Brand and Lea Schüller. Wolfsburg’s winger won Player of the Match for her stunning strike and providing the assist to Schüller.

Tournament Recap

Holders England lost to France in what has been the surprising result so far in the competition. The second round of group stage fixtures started yesterday as Norway became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages.

The two-time champions had a torrid time in England in the last Euros, but Ada Hegerberg and Caroline Graham Hansen are now back to their best. Meanwhile, hosts Switzerland secured a crucial victory against Finland. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Géraldine Reuteler won Player of the Match in both of their games.

Team News

A knee injury to Giulia Gwinn overshadowed Germany’s win against Poland. The captain will be sidelined for several weeks, which means that her tournament ended after 40 minutes of action. The Bayern Munich defender also missed the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand because of an ACL injury.

Denmark have two Bundesliga-based players in their squad. While Bayer Leverkusen’s Cornelia Kramer was an unused sub against Sweden, fellow striker Pernille Harder is the captain and the star player of the side. The Bayern Munich player scored Denmark’s only goal in the 2022 Euros.
